- Copper | Big Jeep Tours | Bisbee, ArizonaCOPPER
Discover the rich history of copper with Big Jeep Tours. Learn about copper's pivotal role in transforming Bisbee from a mining camp into a thriving community. COPPER The Red Metal of Bisbee, Arizona FIND A TOUR Copper is a chemical element, designated by the symbol Cu and atomic number 29 , with an atomic weight of 63.546 atomic mass units (AMU). The name "copper" derives from the Latin 'cuprum,' originally referring to the metal's abundant mining on the island of Cyprus. Copper holds the distinction of being humanity's oldest known metal, with evidence of its use dating back over 5000 years to a pendant found in present-day northern Iraq. Historically significant, ancient Egyptians highly valued copper, symbolized by the ankh to represent eternal life in their hieroglyphs. One of copper’s notable physical properties is its distinctive coloration ; it is one of only two metals that naturally exhibit color, the other being gold. Its ability to be recycled without any degradation in properties underscores its role in sustainable practices. Today, over 400 alloys of copper exist, including brass (copper and zinc) and bronze (copper with tin, aluminum, silicon, and beryllium). Copper mining in the American West, particularly Arizona, Utah, and Montana, surged in the late 1800s with the development of flotation processes that enabled the extraction of copper from low-grade porphyry deposits. This innovation propelled the U.S. to become the world's largest copper producer . Concurrently, the brass mill industry, rooted in early America and concentrated in Connecticut's Naugatuck Valley, evolved from producing simple copper vessels to complex brass items. The advent of hard-drawn copper wire by Thomas Doolittle in 1877 marked a pivotal moment, boosting copper wire demand for telegraph and telephone systems and cementing copper's role in industrial development. Today, a significant portion of all copper ever used has been produced post-World War II, reflecting its critical role in modern industry. Copper played a pivotal role in shaping Bisbee, Arizona, driving its economic and demographic expansion since the late 19th century. The discovery and subsequent development of the Copper Queen Mine, one of the richest copper mines in the area, transformed Bisbee from a remote outpost into a bustling mining town. This mineral wealth attracted a diverse workforce and fostered a robust community, leading to infrastructure and living standards advancements. Copper mining dominated the local economy and embedded a rich cultural heritage , evidenced today by Bisbee’s historical preservation and transformation into a tourist destination that celebrates its mining past. The legacy of copper continues to influence Bisbee’s identity, making it a unique example of how natural resources can shape the historical and economic trajectory of a community. Explore Lowell AZ, near Bisbee—Erie Street’s vintage cars, restored storefronts, gas pumps, and mining-town Americana. See it on Big Jeep Tours (a top thing to do in Bisbee). Lowell AZ VINTAGE CARS & MOTORCYCLES, CLASSIC STOREFRONTS, AND AMERICANA Lowell, AZ is one of the most unique and historic stops on every Big Jeep Tour through Bisbee. Located just southeast of Old Bisbee, this street looks frozen in time. You’ll see old-fashioned gas pumps, restored 1950s storefronts, and vintage cars lining Erie Street, all against the backdrop of Arizona’s mining history. Once a booming mining community, Lowell is now a must-see destination for anyone who loves classic Americana, copper town heritage, and roadside photo ops. It’s an unforgettable part of the journey that makes Big Jeep Tours stand out from other Bisbee experiences. A Time Capsule on Erie Street BOOK YOUR LOWELL AZ TOUR NOW! Frank Hanchett, Founder of Lowell AZ Lowell, Arizona began with the vision of Frank Hanchett, a mining entrepreneur from Lowell, Massachusetts. In February 1899, he purchased key copper claims and launched the Lowell & Arizona Copper Mining and Smelting Company . Within a few months, he opened a deep shaft—900 feet by March 1899—and created jobs for over 60 men with a $10,000 monthly payroll . Frank built much more than a mine—he helped shape a new mining town. Lowell soon had boarding houses, a trolley line, a depot, saloons, and a working-class community that would become a vital part of Bisbee’s copper boom. 🧡 Personal Note: Travis Bishop, your Big Jeep Tours guide, has deep roots here. His great-grandfather settled in Lowell in 1913 and worked in the very same Lowell Mine founded by Hanchett. When you tour with Travis, you’re hearing stories from a 4th-generation Bisbee local whose family helped build the town from the ground up. In 1902, the mine was sold to the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company. It was expanded, modernized with pumps to combat flooding , and became a major producer in the Bisbee mining district. Every time your Jeep rolls down Erie Street, you're passing through land that holds both copper mining history and family legacy. It’s one of the reasons Big Jeep Tours gives such a personal and powerful look at Lowell, AZ. TOUR LOWELL’S CLASSIC STREET Jay Allen: The Biker Legend Who Revived Erie Street Jay Allen isn’t just passionate - he’s legendary. Best known as the founder of the Broken Spoke Saloon, a biker bar icon at Sturgis and Daytona rallies, he brought motorcycles, showmanship, and community to towns across America . With a career that includes setting land speed records, hosting motorcycle roadshows, and building the “World’s Biggest Biker Bar,” Jay has always been about celebrating culture and connection. In Lowell, AZ, his passion took a new turn. “I’ve always pulled for the comeback kid in a movie, and that's what Lowell is,” Jay said of Erie Street kgun9.com. So, he settled right on the strip and began restoring the vintage charm of Erie Street through the Lowell Americana Project. He volunteered his time, money, and expertise—bringing in neon signs, vintage gas pumps, restored storefronts, and classic cars, all staggered along the street." The result? Erie Street became a living photograph, a must-see stop on Big Jeep Tours that feels like stepping into a real 1950s Arizona town. Jay Allen’s Biker Legacy Founded the Broken Spoke Saloon, a landmark at major motorcycle rallies Set numerous land speed records at Bonneville Salt Flats Created traveling Road-Show productions at events like Sturgis Jay’s history in motorcycle culture—and his skill in storytelling and staging—are part of what makes Lowell Americana so authentic and magical.
