MANZANITA

Bearberry

The Manzanita plant, scientifically known as *Arctostaphylos*, is a striking feature of the Bisbee, Arizona landscape. Thriving in the rugged terrain and variable climate of this region, these plants are easily recognizable by their rich, red bark and dense, twisted branches. Typically found in the chaparral and forest borders, Manzanitas bloom with bell-shaped pink or white flowers in the winter and early spring, offering a splash of color against the earthy tones of the desert environment.

One unique quality of the Manzanita is its ability to adapt to and thrive in poor, rocky soils where other plants might struggle. This resilience makes it a hardy native specimen that contributes to the stability and aesthetic of local ecosystems. The berries it produces are not only a vital food source for local wildlife but are also edible to humans, tasting somewhat like tart apples. Manzanitas are thus a beautiful and practical component of Bisbee’s natural flora, blending functionality with natural beauty.
