JAVELINA
Rodent
Javelinas, also known as peccaries, are commonly spotted in and around Bisbee, Arizona. These medium-sized animals, with their coarse salt-and-pepper hair and prominent tusks, are highly adaptable and thrive in the diverse landscapes of the area, from the arid deserts to the scrubby brushlands. Often mistaken for wild pigs, javelinas are actually part of a different family and exhibit unique behaviors. They are social creatures, typically seen in groups called squadrons, which help them protect against predators and forage effectively. Their diet primarily consists of prickly pear cacti, roots, tubers, and other plant material. Residents and visitors alike might catch a glimpse of these intriguing animals during the cooler parts of the day, particularly near dawn and dusk, when they are most active.
